In this section, we will be describing the features of aMSN, which will hopefully give you a better understanding of what the specific features are and their functionality.

Messaging Interface

The messaging interface is the means by which the user interacts with aMSN. This includes the contact list as well as other features which allow the user to easily contact other users.

Contact List/Groups

Understanding the Contact List

The contact list is the central area used to initiate 'conversations' with other people. The contact list can be organized by status, groups, or hybrid. The contacts can be 'named' using their nicknames, using their emails or a name defined by yourself. The groups can be organized in reverse alphabetical order. The contact list displays other users that can be contacted through aMSN. The contact list provides an easy way to know who is online currently.

Adding New Groups

Adding new groups can be accomplished by right clicking on a group, (for example: online), and then selecting "Add a group..." from the menu which pops up.

Adding new groups can also be accomplished by clicking "Add a group", which is located in the "Groups" tab found by clicking Tools > Preferences... > of the aMSN interface.

Removing Groups

Removing groups can be accomplished by right clicking on the group that you would like to remove, and selecting "Delete" from the menu which pops up.

Removing groups can also be accomplished by clicking "Delete a group", which is located in the "Groups" tab found by clicking Tools > Preferences... > of the aMSN interface.

Renaming Groups

Renaming groups can be accomplished by right clicking on the group that you would like to rename, and selecting "Rename..." from the menu which pops up.

Renaming groups can also be accomplished by clicking "Rename a group", which is located in the "Groups" tab found by clicking Tools > Preferences... > of the aMSN interface.

Moving Contacts between Groups

Moving contacts to another group can be accomplished by right clicking on the contact name, then clicking on the group we want the contact to be moved.

Choosing a Contact List Display Mode (Status, Group, Hybrid)

The contact list display options are found in Tools menu, under "Order contacts by..." A brief explanation of each of the display modes:

  • "Status" Mode
The "Status" mode orders your contacts on the contact list by their status. There are two separate groups for this mode; online and offline. Online contacts are shown at the top of the Online group, followed by "busy" and "on phone" contacts, then contacts set to "away", "be right back", "gone to lunch" and "no activity". Offline contacts are shown in the Offline group, sorted alphabetically.

  • "Group" Mode
The "Group" mode allows you to have your contacts separated into groups. The standard set of groups for a new msn account is "Friends", "Family", "Co-workers" and "Others". However, you can create your own groups, and sort contacts into them as you wish. If you change back to "Status" mode, don't worry, you don't lose your groups! You can just switch back to "Group" mode to see them again.

  • "Hybrid" Mode
The "Hybrid" mode is simply mix of the "Groups" and "Status" modes - you have your contacts organised into the same groups, but there is a separate "offline" group, where all offline contacts are shown. This is useful for saving space.

View Contacts By:

You can choose the way you want to see your contact's nicknames:
  • Name : view user's contacts by nickname, name.
  • Email : view user's contacts by email address.
  • Change Global Nick : changes global nickname, howto instructions on changing global nick are provided when this is clicked.

This will organize all your contacts that are online into groups, and all the
people offline in an offline 'group. There will also be a group for users setup to use mobile.

Custom States

Custom states give you greater flexibiliity in conveying your status than simply using the default states. For a given custom state a custom nickname can be assigned as well as a message that will automatically be sent to anyone who sends you a message.

Creating Custom States

To add a custom state click on your name in the main aMSN contact window. This will bring up a list of states. Below the default ones is an entry called "Add custom state". Clicking on this will bring up a dialog with six options.

  • Name of Personal State: This is what you want to call this state. This is how it will appear in the list.
  • Custom nick: Your nick will be changed to this upon switching to this state.
  • I want to appear as: This is how your contacts will see you when you switch to this state. Busy, Away, Offline, etc. You can only select from the normal states.
  • Automessage to Send: This message will be sent if a contact messages you while you are in this custom state.
  • Don't Save: This custom state won't be saved. When you restart aMSN it will be gone.
  • Switch to new state: Upon hitting "Ok" you will automaticaly switch to this state.

Removing Custom States

To remove a custom state click on your name in the main aMSN window as if to change your status. Select "Delete custom state" then select the state you want to delete from the list.

Using Custom States

Using a custom state is as easy as changing your status like you normally would. Just select any of the custom states you've created instead of the normal Busy, Away, etc. Custom states are useful for things like telling people you're playing a game or that you've gone somewhere and having an automessage to say when you'll be back.

Alarms

img/wiki_up//AlarmConfig.jpg

Alarms are an easy way to notify you of an event. As of 0.94 aMSN has alarms for a user coming online, a user sending a message, a user changing status, and a user going offline/invisible.

There are two types of alarms: global and user. Global alarms apply to all users on your contact list, user alarms are specific to a single user on your contact list.

Creating/Configuring New User Alarms

To create or edit an alarm for a single user first right-click (alternate-click) on the user and select "Configure/Add/Remove Alarm"

To create an alarm:

Click on the box next to "Turn ON/OFF Alarm for this user" . The box will turn red to indicate the box has been selected.

Then click on the boxes next to the events you would like the alarm to sound for, again the box will turn red to indicate it has been selected.

From this point on when any of the events occur a message box show up.

To enable a sound alarm:

Click on the "Browse" button next to the "Sound File" section, and select the sound file you would like as the alarm sound.

Then click on the box next to "Sound Alarm" if you would like the sound to loop click on the loop sound box.

To execute a command everytime an event occurs:

Type in the command in the input field, and select the box underneath it "Execute Command"

To send a message to the user when an event occurs:

Type the message in the input field and select the box underneath it "Send Message"

Creating/Configuring New Global Alarms

To create a global alarm (an alarm that applies to all users) first right-click on your own user name and select "Configure/Add/Remove Global Alarms"

The rest of the creation process is similar to creating alarms for single users. Refer to "Creating New User Alarms"

Removing Alarms

To remove all alarms for a single user, right-click on their user name and select "Configure/Add/Remove Alarms" and click "Delete" at the bottom of the window.

To remove all global alarms, simply right-click your own user name and select "Configure/Add/Remove Global Alarms" and click "Delete" at the bottom of the window.

Display Pictures

Display pictures are a way of personalizing amsn. Display pictures are a good way for users to be able to tell who they are talking to by simply glancing at the user's display picture.

Display pictures are also an excellent way for a user to display their likes, dislikes, mood, hobbies, etc.

Setting Display Pictures

A display picture can be used for many things. Some people use them to show a picture of themself or their significant other. Some people use it to show their moods. Some people even use it to show funny pictures.

To set a display picture:
  • right click on the default amsn logo display picture and click change.
  • Browse to the directory of any picture you want and select it to set as your picture.
  • Click OK and the display picture will be updated.

Viewing Other's Display Pictures

Cached Display Pictures

Cached display picture is one that each buddy on your msn list uses and your computer stores it on your computer for quick access.

To view them:
  • Those files are stored in the amsn (windows) or ./amsn (linux) folder, into your account folder (ex. "username@email.com")
  • enter the folder called display pictures and in there is a folder called cache.
This is where these are stored.

Alternately, you can goto the change display picture preferences and there will be a little box there that says show cached pictures and there they are. It also gives you the option to use them as your own display picture or even delete them.

Lazy display pictures retrieval

Lazy display pictures retrieval is in the advanced preferences, it means we won't retrieve a display picture of someone else if we don't get a conversation with them. If we don't check that box, we retrieve new display pictures immediatly when they change it even if we don't talk to them.

Docking

Docking is a nice aMSN feature which docks an icon in the systray so that aMSN can be controlled without maximizing the aMSN interface window.

Activating the Dock Applet

The dock applet can be activated by clicking Tools > Docking, from the aMSN interface, and choosing the desired docking type depending on your desktop environment.

Note: dock applet must be pre-compiled before using (except on windows systems)

Using the Dock Applet

The dock applet creates a small icon in the system tray which can be used to : log out of aMSN, change user nickname, change user status, send message, send mail, and close aMSN.

Start AMSN on tray icon only

Setting this option will minimize your contact list to the system tray upon opening amsn. This can be good so that your desktop isn't cluttered with windows. To sign in, just open your contact list and sign in normally.

To set amsn to do this:
  • open the Tools, Preferences window
  • click "start aMSN on tray icon only" in the Appearance section

Restrict all fonts' size to the one I selected (Status bar and others)

Offset the position of the notification pop-up

Sometimes you want the notification window to pop up in a different location than the default. If your taskbar is not on the bottom of your screen or it is taller than normal, the notification window will pop up in the wrong area or will obstruct a part of your taskbar. This is a less than optimal situation which can be remedied by changing the X Offset and Y Offset advanced options.

X Offset

The default X Offset is 0. This corresponds to the right edge of the screen. The X offset is taken relative to the right edge of the notification window. Increasing values move the notification window to the left. For instance, a value of 50 will cause the notification window to pop up 50 pixels to the left of where it normally does.

Y Offset

The default Y Offset is 28. This corresponds to 28 pixels above the bottom of your screen. The Y offset is taken relative to the bottom of the notification window. Lets say you're taskbar is 48 pixels tall instead of 28. In this situation when the notification window pops up it obstructs 20 pixels of your taskbar, to avoid this you can just change the Y Offset to be 48. Now the notification window will pop up above your taskbar.

Connect on amsn start

Connect on aMSN start means as soon as you open amsn, it will sign in with the password saved. It is good for lazy people like me who dont like having to type in their login information all the time. It also makes reconnecting fast if you get booted for some reason.

To enable auto connect,
  • go to the preferences, advanced tab
  • select "Connect on amsn start" under the Connection section
  • click save

aMSN will now autoconnect once it has been restarted.

Send Message

Using this option, you can open a chat window to a contact in order to talk with him/her. Anyways, you can use a simpler way to start chating with a contact by double clicking its nickname in the contact list.

If you want to open a chat window to an user by only clicking once in its contact name, you can enable "Single click to open a new message window" in the Tools / Preferences menu, under the Advanced tab, inside the Appearence section.

Send Mail

You can send an email to one of your contacts by right clicking on it's name and then choosing "Send mail". Then you can see an internet browser showing you Hotmail and you can compose the email.

If no window is shown, perhaps you must configure your prefered internet browser for aMSN. You can do that by selecting Tools / Preferences in the main window of aMSN. Then you choose "Others" and fill the browser information. If your prefered browser is Firefox, you must write firefox $url

Change Nick

Check for New Version

This option checks the aMSN repository to see if there is a new aMSN version available, if so, it will download it.

This option is found under Actions > check for new version... in the aMSN interface.

Selecting a Skin

This option allows the user to change the appearance of aMSN by means of a skin. You can change the skin under Tools > Select Skin... in the aMSN interface.

Selecting a Language

You can change the language in which aMSN is shown by clicking on Tools / Language in the main window of aMSN.

You can change the language too by clicking on the word Language in the main window of aMSN when you're still not loged on to your account.

Extra Features

Applescript

AppleScript is an English-like language used to write script files that automate the actions of the computer and the applications that run on it.

Much more than a macro-language that simply repeats your recorded actions, AppleScript can make decisions based on user interaction or by parsing and analyzing data, documents or events. (reference: apple.com)

Linphone

Linphone is a web phone: it lets you phone to your friends anywhere in the whole world, freely, simply by using the internet. The cost of the phone call is the cost that you spend connected to the internet (reference: http://www.linphone.org/)

Philippe G. Khalaf created this wrapper for amsn in 2004. This program is based on Wang, Zhanglei's linphone wrapper for Gaim, which brings linphone to the tcl world (tcl bindings for linphone)

Linphone can be found in the plugins directory in the aMSN folder.

tclCarbonNotification

tclCarbonNotification is a Critcl wrapper for Mac OS X Notification Manager services. Author: Daniel A. Steffen

Tabbed Chatwindow

Tabbed chat is a good thing. It allows you to have all of your conversations in one window, saving space in your taskbar. If you're chatting to a lot of people and don't like to close the windows but want to keep your taskbar clear, tabbed chat is good. It is a neat and efficient way to organize your conversations without the clutter of multiple windows.
